to nourish in an effortless natural flow like on a calm sea
where one wave replaces another mild and soft

自然の流れの中で、凪ぐ海の穏やかな潮汐に身を任せるように生きる

The rainy season is coming soon and a new “oasis” is about to be born in Otsuka, Tokyo.
A collaboration between Asta, an artist and also a fashion designer from Iceland and Takuya Komaba, a Japanese artist has been realized. They first met in the forest of Abiko. The swaying of the trees, the sunlight filtered through the trees, whispering of the wind ―the place full of the breath of the living seemed like being in the quiet ocean. Japan is very far from Iceland, still being an island nation, they have much in common. Above all the two artists are strongly bonded togerher in the animistic nature worship. The theme of the coming exhibition “Rippling/sazanami” is consistent through their collaboration;to focus on a natural phenomenon and output it in an installation. In the deep forest, they try to construct a kind of an abstract spiritual world. In the process, they weave, spin, tie and sew such materials as cloth, thread, string and bamboo. The work completed is a device for purifying the neighborhood .
This time they’ve chosen ano ano galerie for the first indoor space for expression. By the way, the works of Takuya Komaba are exhibited here lastingly. The name of the gallery “ano ano” means “a seed” in Hawaiian and the beginning and the ending of a seed is symbolized into the gallery space using Japanese cedar and plywood. The device the two artists create in this site-specific space must be a new oasis in the sordid and impersonal desert of Tokyo.
We are happy if the coming exhibition can give peace of mind to those who visit here.

梅雨の始まる頃、東京の大塚に新しいオアシスが誕生する。 アイスランド出身で、ファッションデザイナーでもあるアウスタと日本人アーティスト駒場拓 也によるユニット。二人の出会いは我孫子の森の中であった。木々の揺らめきと木洩れ日、風 が囁き、生き物の息吹に包まれたそこは、静かな海の中を漂う様だったという。 日本とアイスランドは非常に離れた国ではあるが、共に島国であり、共通点が多い。その中で も、日本のアニマミズム的自然信仰が2人を強く結びつけている。 『Rippling/さざなみ』というテーマは、彼らがユニットとして作品を制作するのにおいて、一貫 したものであり、自然の中の一つの現象にフォーカスし、インスタレーションという形でアウ トプットしたものである。木々の生い茂る森の中で、自然界には存在しない白色を使う事で、 一種の抽象化された精神世界を布、糸、紐、竹などのマテリアルを編む、繋ぐ、結ぶ、縫うな どして構築していく。完成した作品はその界隈を浄化する装置として稼働しだす。 今回、彼らが表現の場所として選んだのは、初の屋内空間、アノアノギャラリーである。この 空間は駒場拓也の作品が恒久展示されている。30m²ほどの空間のフローリングがそれである。 ギャラリーの名前である「ano ano」とはハワイ語で「種」を意味し、その始まりと終わり、成 長のシンボルからイメージした構図を杉板、合板を使い具現化している。 このサイトスペシフィックな空間で2人が作り上げる新たな装置は、この猥雑で無機質な東京砂 漠の新しいオアシスになる。 この展示が、訪れたものに一時の安らぎを少しでも与えることが出来れば幸いである。

I found some damage trees in Flower Village.

I believe we are all meant to shine, from within and for eachother.

In Fukushima I was staying in old traditional japanese house form Edo period. I felt fortunate

to stay there and to express my impressions and feelings. But at same time it felt difficult to

create artwork about the place and the situation the people had to deal with after the

earthquake from 2011. What became clear to me was the importance to know and value the

past to be able to enjoy the present and to create our future. The wonderful landscape around

this place the fruitful nature created the “Life Cycle”.

In my first days in Fusa I saw a tree that had “strangled” another tree. It reminded me of the importance of respecting each other. Learning about other cultures and accepting their different ways of life. This was my inspiration for my work in Abiko.

Fire Red ....was an installation in a factory, mending and making nets, in Vestmannaeyjar, an island south of Iceland. In my childhood I used to visit this place with my father, visiting my uncles. This was the most exiting place for me, big piles of nets and materials with wonderful atmosphere. I asked my uncles few years ago if I could work with them for few days and at the end of my stay I would do an installation in their working place. It was during a festival on the island where the inhabitants celebrated 40 years since the end of volcanic eruption on the island, which started january 23 1973 and ended in june this same year.
